The Intensive, is designed for composers seeking to expand their creative and professional skill set through focused work in composition, orchestration, conducting, music preparation, songwriting, and professional recording.

Today's media composer is asked to do more than write great music. Composers must be able to work across styles and recording environments, communicate effectively with musicians and collaborators, understand the recording process, and adapt creatively to the needs of each project.

The Intensive 2027 addresses these demands through seven days of programming—including one online preparatory day followed by six days in Los Angeles, and three distinct recording experiences.

Open to composers at different stages of their artistic and professional development, The Intensive brings together a deliberately small cohort of no more than 14 Fellows for an intensive week of learning through doing.

• A current CV outlining your professional musical experience (pdf file preferred)

• A mock-up or recording of one of your compositions that best represents your work (vocal or instrumental pieces are both accepted)

While not required, a notated score of your submitted composition is strongly encouraged. For guidance on score presentation, please refer to the LAFCI Part/Score Formatting Recommendations available in the Resource Center. Applications not containing a notated score will still receive full consideration. 

 

This workshop has no age limit but participants must be at least 18 years of age by the start of the workshop.

Submission deadline is October 16, 2026.

Applicants will be notified of application decisions no later than October 25, 2026.   

The $20 application fee can be paid via PayPal (if choosing PayPal, please be aware they will add an additional service fee), wire transfer (please write to info@lafci.org to request wire instructions) or check (mailed to LAFCI (2331 Victoria Ave. Oxnard, California 93035).

All materials must be submitted no later than 11:59pm Pacific Time (Los Angeles) on October 16, 2026. Selected participants will be notified via email no later than October 25, 2026. If accepted, a non-refundable 50% tuition fee must be received no later than November 15, 2026 and the remaining balance no later than December 31, 2026.
